The Glass Onion Society, Long Jetty

A man in a suit with a radiating onion for a head – that’s exactly the kind of kookiness that sums up Long Jetty’s The Glass Onion Society. It’s always busy, rain or shine so you’ll want to arrive in the early morning if you want to snag a seat at the communal table indoors. There’s plenty of seats outside in the sunshine though. Somewhat unsurprisingly, it also doubles as a small exhibition space with a rotating resident artist.

The Glass Onion Society uses a house blend from Espressology for their espresso based coffees (regular $3.50/large $4.50) and different single origins for the pour over ($4.50) and cold drip ($4.50). Depending on the week, you could get anything from an Ethiopian bean – as I did – to a Kenyan. In keeping with the kooky vibe, the spoon you stir your coffee with comes from a seemingly novel collection of travel and ornamental spoons.

If seeing all the pretty people at the beach has – for some reason – made you feel like you should be a little healthier, go for the bircher bonanza ($12.50). It’s a filling mix of muesli, macadamia nut granola, and tart goji berries for extra health points. There’s refreshing dollops of mango puree and greek yogurt with chia seeds sprinkled on top.

Not feeling the health kick? Go old-school with the traditional ($15.50) – bacon, toast, two eggs any way you like, and some housemade tomato sauce. If you’re like me where the words “caramelized onion jam” scream at you from a menu, the ‘Time To Shine’ bacon & egg roll ($9) is your best bet. It’s a poached egg, bacon, onion jam (yay), and a creamy basil and feta sauce all on a toasted bap roll. Can’t really go wrong with a b&e roll really.

There’s very few places in the Jetty for a meal. So if you’re going to eat there, why not put The Glass Onion Society at the top of your list (then maybe a second coffee at Lucky)? It’s got both filling and light dishes, single origin beans, and lovely staff who keep their cool even when there’s new tables constantly walking in and food flying out of the kitchen. You may as well have an early breakfast here so you can squeeze in as much beach time as possible at places like The Entrance or Shelly Beach.
