I had planned to have lunch with a friend, so we drove to Surry Hills, parked the car, looked at a list of cafes and picked one because “it sounds nice”. That is how I ended up in Boscage on a windy afternoon. There’s quite a few cafes popping up all over Sydney’s inner city and this is just one of many in Surry Hills. There aren’t any signs hanging up outside and it was only with a cursory glance at menus lying on the outdoor tables that we realized where the café was.
A giant hunk of pink salt serves as a centrepiece for a larger table seating six and the walls are decorated with some potted plants, wine bottles, and a few lanterns. The menus are clipped to copper toned back boards and remind my friend of a Vogue magazine cover (it’s because of the font). Some of the items jump out at me like gruyere scrambled eggs for breakfast or house made gnocchi with pork shank for lunch. But the drinks are definitely the most eye-catching. Alongside your standard coffees is a lavender, cucumber and elderflower soda and a lychee and lime shake. It made me wish I had a dedicated stomach for drinks.
The porridge arrives in a bowl shaped like an evil queen’s large collar. All it needs is a smartphone mount and you’ve got the perfect angle for instagramming. Let’s face it, plain porridge is boring. Good thing the strawberries and sugar gave it some life. Side note: am I the only who thinks poached strawberries would be part of a fairy’s diet? Hearty braised beans on toast and a gooey-centred scotch egg are a good alternative if you’re looking for something a little more filling. Dried rose buds float on top of pink tea, which looks whimsical and has a delicate fragrance.
While Surry Hills may have lost its hipster-stronghold status to Newtown, establishments like Boscage are helping to keep the scene trendy and relevant. Kind of like what the Lower East Side is to Williamsburg; cool but not as ‘artsy’. I like it here; the food is good, the drinks are fun, and you can tuck yourself into a corner table or relax at a sunlit table. Guess which one I chose that day.
