Twenty 8 Acres, Darlington

Sometimes you plan to catch up with The Social’s Jacob Horne over coffee and sometimes you want to visit a nice cafe you just found. That is when you realize “why not do both things at the same time?” The cafe in question is Twenty 8 Acres, tucked away in the inner-Sydney suburb of Darlington and a stone’s throw away from Sydney University. This quiet, little establishment is a great place to begin your ‘waking up’ process.

Chefs Brendan Nolan and Adam Davis have created a menu with Irish and British influences that showcases seasonal produce. It features items like black pudding hash, full Irish breakfast, and paprika and garlic salmon fillet. Almost everything is done in-house, from pickling to curing. The small main dining room is airy and pleasant, and there are also two quaintly decorated patios. On each table is a pot plant with cute shamrock flags stuck in them.

'Wake me up' juice ($6)
House cured salmon, crushed potato salad, pickled cucumber, beets, soft boiled egg ($20)
Leave some room for the house special: cured salmon. A scroll of ruby red salmon sits atop a mountain of creamy crushed potato salad. Combined with pickles and a runny yolk, it is a carb-heavy but delicious brunch. Wash it all down with an aptly named ‘wake me up’ juice made of apple, carrot, and ginger.

Being secluded is a bonus. It means you are able to catch up with friends in peace or enjoy a book over a great meal. Unless you go looking for Twenty 8 Acres, you are unlikely to stumble upon it. Béile blasta dhuit!
