Pho Viet, Cabramatta

Pho Viet

Pho Viet is widely known for their phở, many rave about it, but there are other options that you should also try. It’s on the quiet end of Cabramatta’s main strip and also happens to be the only place you can find mì quảng in the area.

I’d say that mì quảng is to Central Vietnam what phở is to Northern Vietnam – a staple in the family diet, often enjoyed with others on a cold day. If your mom makes it often, you’d probably defend hers as the best you’ve ever had. That’s the kind of dish it is.

When you order mì quảng ($12) at Pho Viet, you’ll get a bowl of thick cut rice noodles – colored bright yellow using turmeric – with prawns and pork, swimming in a mildly spicy, belly warming broth. Break up a prawn-flavored rice cracker into the bowl and enjoy. It’s one of those things that is best enjoyed while you sit elbow to elbow with your family at a long table buzzing with conversation.

As a little kid, I used to love soda sữa hột gà ($4.50) – Vietnamese egg soda – but I could never figure out why. Be warned, the distinct egginess may put you off if you’re not used to it. The best way I could describe it is as a very eggy vanilla ice cream float that’s as carbonated as a flat soda. It brings back a lot of memories for me.

You’ll definitely be slurping up the noodles so don’t wear a white shirt… or do. Wear that stain like a badge of honor. Pho Viet is one of those typical looking Cabramatta restaurants designed to be cleaned easily and to allow the staff to whip around quickly with orders. Table real estate is precious; it’ll be filled to the edges with food, plates of herbs, and tea cups. I’d urge you to try something new like the mì quảng. There’s much more to Vietnamese food than summer rolls and phở.
