Cleveland's, Redfern

A barber and a barista walk into a bar. I’m not sure what goes down but we somehow end up with Cleveland’s – it’s a cafe at the front and a salon at the back. This sounds like a weird combination but they’ve been making it work since 2012. I’d heard that “it seems like somewhere you would want to check out just because” which seems to be a good reason as any.

Walking into Cleveland’s on my self-imposed lunch break, I suddenly found myself thinking that being able to find both a portafilter and straight razor in the same shop made perfect sense. It must have been the subway tiles, gold lettering, and pastries under cloches. The varying bottles of gin and bourbon (there’s even an Aperol) lining the shelves and counter may have helped that perception.

I should also mention that Cleveland’s is no-fuss – you don’t have to commit to any sort of sit down meal. Just pop in for a large flatty ($4) and a croissant ($3.50) to give you that much-needed midday energy boost. The cafe is only open until 1pm but let’s be honest, most of us need our caffeine way before then. They use Little Marionette beans and more importantly, their baked goods are from Brickfields.

It seems remiss to not mention the salon at least a little bit – it does make up half the shop. All I need to tell you is you can enjoy a glass of whisky or a long black while getting your hair cut. It would probably take the edge off having to part with your locks. If your shopping list includes beard gloss and a pain au chocolat, Cleveland’s will take care of two birds with one stone.
