Bean & Berry is about three months old and has already achieved a steady stream of customers and loyalists. It’s pretty impressive when you remember that there’s no shortage of cafes in Redfern right now and that they’re literally next door to Coffee, Tea & Me.
It’s an airy space with huge windows and high ceilings. As for the décor, think a cross between rustic and the Windows XP 3D pipes screensaver. I’m completely serious. When I arrived, all the tables besides a two-top in the back corner and the counter seating were taken. Cue me doing an awkward sideways shuffle to squeeze between tables to get to the back corner.
If, like me, you had to run out of the house in the morning without breakfast, the bircher muesli ($9.90) is a yummy replacement. Bean & Berry do their muesli without milk and with slices of green apple. I also liked that I was able to find morsels of caramelized fig in it. For something a little more substantial, try the shredded haloumi, green olive and tomato on sourdough ($12.90). There’s also an antipasto board ($17.90) – featuring prosciutto, triple smoked ham, and semi dried tomatoes – on offer. It’s a fairly big board so you might want to share with a friend.
Summer’s almost here so if you’re feeling like you need to be a little healthier, opt for a pear and cinnamon smoothie ($6.90). How about making today your cheat day and treating yourself to a peanut butter milkshake ($6.90). Sounds good right? It just wouldn’t be a proper Redfern cafe without a specialty roaster. Here, it’s Leftfield Coffee – relatively new kids from Marrickville. I can’t think of any places serving Leftfield right now, so you might want to get a small flat white ($3.50) to see what’s up with this roaster.
Bean & Berry features a solid barista team and a kitchen dishing up fulfilling brunch fare. It’s got a lot of life in it. I expect it to still be open and busy when I stroll through Redfern two years from now (which is probably a decade in cafe-time).
