Miss America's Diner, Riverwood

It’s hard to miss the violent display of Americana that is Miss America’s Diner – a cafe turned diner for a few nights a week. Riverwood isn’t the first suburb to spring to mind for pop-ups but hey, I’m not complaining. A pop-up diner is a pop-up diner. There’s brightly colored vinyl table covers, American flags, and a white picket fence. Unsurprisingly, the menu is filled with burgers, hot dogs (or dawgs in this case), sundaes, and pie.

The fat elvis ($11) is a kransky dog in a soft bun with sweet onion, cheese, and the holy trio of sauces: bbq, tomato, and mustard. Can’t go wrong with a hot diggity-dawg. Then there’s the colossal Nevada get me wrong ($14) burger – double beef patties, cheddar, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and special ‘Nevada’ sauce. Besides the lettuce being pointless, it was delicious, especially with the tangy and creamy ‘Nevada’. It’s impossible to finish either without getting sauce on your face. In the words of the legendary Latrice Royale, “that’s delicious, I don’t care if it’s not nutritious”.

You already know the meal will be devastating to your cholesterol levels so why not take a ‘go big or go home’ attitude and order a plate of aptly-named heart attack fries ($12). Feel yourself inching towards a delicious death with these crispy skinny fries topped with crispy bacon and two types of melted cheese. Meanwhile my inner kid is having all sorts of fun with a grape spider ($7.50) because who doesn’t love grape soda mixed with soft serve, whipped cream, and topped with candy?

Miss America’s is all about garish colors and a menu that isn’t for the faint-hearted. Literally. It’s so much fun to have a night out there until you remember that you’ll probably have to run three kilometres to get rid of that burger… Side note: the waitresses have the cutest retro dresses ever!
